Qlik Sense has progressed in leaps and bounds since its initial release in 2014. And, the September 2019 release is no different.
Every Qlik Sense release brings more and more of the best QlikView features into the modern, mobile-friendly Qlik Sense. With the November 2018 release we received variable inputs, tabbed containers and buttons, all playing their part to create intuitive guided analytics dashboards.

Default Landing Sheets
Default landing sheets were extremely popular in QlikView, enhancing the guided analytics experience.
This functionality is now included within Qlik Sense and can be combined with the existing predefined selection functionality to set a key focal point as soon as the application is opened.
You can also set a default landing sheet by utilising the default bookmark capability that already exists in Qlik Sense:
- Navigate to a sheet
- Apply any required selections and create a bookmark
- Right-click on the bookmark and set as default
- Next time you open the application, the sheet that was active when the bookmark was created will open, instead of the App Overview – with any selections applied.
Increased Search Limit on Filter Panes
In Qlik Sense June 2019 (and earlier versions), filter panes had a search limit of 255 characters. This prevented users from being able to copy large amounts of distinct values to be applied as selections. In Qlik Sense September 2019 this limit has been increased to 5,000 characters.
Expression Promotion
Master items can now be created from within an existing object. This allows you to develop and test your expressions within a chart object without having to go back to the master measure to edit. Once you’re happy with your expression, click ‘Add Master Item’ to instantly save as a master item for use within other objects.
Mapping – Current Location
Users will now see a new button on the map chart, allowing their location to be taken from the device and added as an icon on the map.
This allows users to use the circle-select tool to calculate distances between their current location and the other plotted locations.
This can be enabled within the properties pane of a map object.
Variance Waterfall Chart
The variance waterfall chart is a nice new addition to the visualisation bundle, the main use case for this chart is to show variance between forecast and actuals stepping through a set of dimension values.
Pie Chart Styling
The Qlik Sense June 2019 release included revamped styling for the bar chart and now it’s the pie chart’s turn for advanced styling in the September 2019 release.
The new styling options include outline width, colour, corner radius and inner radius. This brings back some of the configuration that was available in QlikView, aiding the transition for customers moving from QlikView to Qlik Sense.
The new styling options can be accessed via the ‘Styling’ button in the Presentation section of the properties pane.
Joining Data Within The Data Manager
In Qlik Sense September 2019, it is now possible to perform left, right, inner and outer joins from within the Data Manager.
Previously it was only possible to join data from within the Data Load Editor.
Mobile
Qlik Sense users can now access Qlik Sense from within a MobileIron environment via Web@work, Safari and Chrome – expanding access within secure MDM environments even further.
Connectors
The Salesforce connector is now available on all Qlik Sense editions, including the latest Qlik Sense Enterprise on Kubernetes.
